Title: BREAKING: SWAT4 SERVER LIST DOWN

Dear Community,
 
It seems nobody is able to find any SWAT4 Game servers in the ingame serverlist.
Something seems wrong with the GameSpy query servers/support.
It is not clear what the problem is exactly, all we know is SWAT4 servers can't reach the master server and have stopped responding to ping requests.
Check yourself, open your game and check the serverlist, it shows up all empty, no matter how much refreshes you'll do.
As soon as we learn more (hopefully from GameSpy), we will update you of course!

After some further investigation, I figured out why direct IP joining doesn't work.
When you join through Direct IP, the game server actually receives your request to join.
Problem is, the server needs to verify some stuff, which goes through GameSpy, which is exactly the service being down/unsupported(we don't know for sure yet).
I am not sure why normal Pinging doesn't work yet.

I've managed to join SWAT 4 game servers which run in bLan=True mode (in SwatGuiState.ini).
You cannot query the servers, but you can join them (only if they are in bLan=True).

Fix to query and join your game server:

In SwatGuiState.ini, set:
bLan=True

In Swat4(X)DedicatedServer.ini set:
ServerQueryListenPort=10481

ServerQueryListenPort should be your port number + 1.
For example, is your port number 19480, then ServerQueryListenPort should be 19481

Querying the game server will only work from Xfire, it won't show up in the ingame server (no server does atm).

that solution works, and i can join.
but, after each 10 minutes, all got kicked:

Hi MarkieBoy & ALL

After repaired in efforts by Cold. We rejoin our server but it seems there is a bug.

- Maps fixers, Number of rounds 7 Number of players 20 (slots).

Example:
as soon as I join our server (SoH in Direct IP + Password) as SA.
I played only 1 to 2 minutes after the server crashes, so I DISCONNECTED and I reconnect but there! the round restarts at the beginning.
I can not play 7 rounds, the server crashes.

Those whose game server crashes, have you read this properly?

ServerQueryListenPort should be your port number + 1.
For example, is your port number 19480, then ServerQueryListenPort should be 19481

i set:
bLAN=True
ServerQueryListenPort=21481

and still server crash  :(

If you start the server and run a netstat command youll see that the server is working but its not claiming the query port. 10481 in my case.

I did the same thing you say here: bLAN=True
ServerQueryListenPort=10481

The server works with Xfire, but is there a way to force the server use the default query? Im working on that now.

No BLAN should be set to False in the Swat4GuiState.ini

ServerQueryListenPort=10491 as an example

also why not try HLSW to connect to your server.

Thanks for sharing that link.
It seems GameSpy has serious troubles with some other games as well.
We'll sit tight and hope for a quick fix from GameSpy.

The server seems to respond to ping requests just fine, can't get much info about it though.

we can find server in gametracker , but it does not show server in which version  . We need Much time test which server can join or not . Can you setup server list in markmod website , let us easy know what version server we can join ?

Where did you get this from? I don't see that anywhere in my log files (even if I stop suppressing all stuff in Core.System).
It would be very helpful, since I am doing a network capturing and so far I haven't found anything connecting to the masterserveruplink (while it should...)

Ip to Domainname didn't find any domainnames on that ip address unfortunately.
Neither I can find the IP address anywhere in the source code or config files.

It seems almost impossible to build a replicate of the master server.
There is a certain authentication method I haven't figured out, yet.
Have been able to make the game server connect to my own "master server", though it gets stuck in the authentication process.

I see that the master server is requesting the swat key, so this server must contain some keys or hashed-keys to test out.
when the request is sent to the master server, this one will hash each swat key he is hosting to compare it to the hash sent by the client, but what's the hash methode ? MD5 ?

Guys, if you need something related to the reverse engineeing, just ask. I'd try to do my best. I think it could be possible to find out how the authentication to the master server works. It seems to be part of IpDrv.dll.
And yes, CD hash seems to be based of MD5.

What does it mean "your own master server"? Just TCP server running on specified port without any logic or something more?

i'm sur the IP is present in game configs, but they probably put it into a dll  >:(

decompile will not help, it will only give name of functions present in dll  :(

You can disassemble it, but you'll need to be able to read the assembler output.  :-X
C++, or any combination of "efficiency options", there is absolutely no way to standardize a decompiler.

Yes, it seems so. According to the disassembly, after some data are received from the server, there can be some auth request - sending CD key hash (along with other info such as OS?!) or testing of the APPROVED / DENIED strings received from the master server etc.
Probably I'll try to debug the whole thing somehow. It could be more helpful.

ut2003master1.epicgames.com (whicch is not responding now)
but i found this one : ut2003master2.epicgames.com, and seems reachable, why not to test it ?

I'm working on a masterserver list alternative. (work in progress: http://www.markmods.com/swat4masterserver/ )
First a web version, if the main masterserver remains offline after monday I'll start on a client mod integrated in SWAT4.
But let's hope the masterserver will get back online soon.

yes but i don't think it will work cuz both the servers are online and are just like diff ports to a server. but i would surely like to try it.
i try to hash the ipdrv.u and find its hash in packages.md5 and packages.txt but didn't find it anywhere , don't know where does the game save the hash for this file.
anyway even if i succeed we need the master server mechanism , if someone finds / leaks it , someone would need to host master server

Hosting isn't a problem, MarkMods is willing to do so.

How did you manage to try to connect to the ut2003master1.epicgames.com instead of swat4.available.gamespy.com (which is also defined in some *.u)? I suppose that by default settings, the game connects to the gamespy (only?). I'm not able to simulate connection to the epicgames :-/

But let's hope the masterserver will get back online soon.

Please, make sure you cooperate with the other hosts. It would be hateful if it was a swat client for every server hoster.

Thanks for your feedback, however I do not fully understand what you are aiming at. What do you mean exactly? This is the best moment for feedback, since development is now :)

Not sure if I have enough time to finish it this weekend though (if at all), since I have a Math Test this monday, which requires some more studying.

I edited IpDrv.u with a Hex editor, it didn't show general protection failure...I just tried to switch to secondary master server:

I supose this "client mod integrated in SWAT4" is pretty much change the masterserver to yours right? What I meant is that there are other SWAT4 server hosters that (obviously) are experiencing the same problem and probably gonna try to make a masterserver themselves and a client mod too so it works on their servers, generating a clusterfuck of swat clients just to play on some servers, so, I think you should open this discussion (officially) to hosts like revhosting, nlsevernl, so they all work for the same goal (a general master server, impartial).

I constantly scheming to ports, change ip port (querylistenport too) and nothing works. Or the server will not boot or kicking all players every 10 minutes ;(


Yeah i changed to. after it server begun to work. but server crashing every 5 minutes.

altering this is only helpfull to change the master server the host connects to.
the clients would be connecting to the master server that is now down.

btw how can i use edited *.u files with swat 4 ? it shows general protection failure , i tried to hash the original one and search in packages.md5 and packages.txt but it only has hashes for some files. :S

I edited IpDrv.u with a Hex editor, it didn't show general protection failure...I just tried to switch to secondary master server:

Hello all,

i have looked in the server status reports ;) Maybe it isn't an error of the game, more a problem of markmods? Because in our status reports is written:
Start   MarkMods attempted to start the server.   13/10/2012 16:36:10
Stop   MarkMods stopped the server, since it did not respond to query requests.   13/10/2012 16:36:09
So MM has stopped the server and restarted again to see, if the server is online then... Maybe i have something not read in the thread and this is discused, but if not... :)

So, me again :) I have tested some servers, which are online in gametracker. And all servers are hosted by any other game server hosting company, excluding MarkMods. I my therory is, that MarkMods is the onliest provider which check, if the server is online to provide any config faults, and if the servers can not queried, the system restarts the server automatically.

Yes, that we can do, i think, but this is not solving our problem, that only game servers hosted by MM crashes, the other servers are online all over the time, everyone can conncet via direct IP, but not to servers from MM :(

Yes, i know... Thats one of my problems, i cant find all online servers for add them to this program. Its not only for MM server hosting... Its for servers what use any version of MarkMod (same as Master Server list of MM).

It seems so, that MM start the server new automatically every 5 minutes, if the server is can not query. This is a problem of MarkMods, not of Gamespy.

My problem is related to this topic...

As you can see, other people have the same issue:

After repaired in efforts by Cold. We rejoin our server but it seems there is a bug.

- Maps fixers, Number of rounds 7 Number of players 20 (slots).

Example:
as soon as I join our server (SoH in Direct IP + Password) as SA.
I played only 1 to 2 minutes after the server crashes, so I DISCONNECTED and I reconnect but there! the round restarts at the beginning.
I can not play 7 rounds, the server crashes.


Our server : 188.40.97.185:21480
i set:
bLAN=True
ServerQueryListenPort=21481

and still server crash  :(

Markieboy pls check seems to me Markmods has problem. if all server restarting itself its not problem of GameSpy. I think so

Emopig, its problem with crack i guess. That problem does occur for many people.

Talking about Master Server, we must try to build an alternative. My friend had tweeted to GameSpy technical director who gave this response "The multiplayer services are run by an entirely different company, Glu Mobile. Nothing I can do, sadly." Hmm...so petition doesnt sort out the issue i see :)

I think there are several in-theory possible ways how to implement "games list" functionality.

1. develop external program as mentioned above + custom master server = probably most easy solution, as it can be developed by almost anybody
2. develop client mod communicating with custom master server via our custom protocol (if possible, but i think yes and maybe markieboy was mentioning this..?)
3. modify swat 4 settings to connect to our emulated epicgames master server
4. (in theory) modify swat 4 settings to connect to our emulated gamespy master server

The nr 3 & 4 would require reverse engineering of current communication to the master servers. Communication to the gamespy server and epicgames server is totally differemt. Also, from what I learned, it may be possible, that epicgames master server does not support filtering games, etc. It does not support sending stats for sure. Therefore I think the best solution would be nr. 1 or 2 as they could be "easily" modified in future.

Gaming deluxe has e-mail gamespy tech to see if they can acquire the master server files with no response, think we're on our own here. I'm happy to help with funding anything so give me a shout if any monetry problems arise, as of the technical side of things i'm not all that great...perl is about as far as i go.

MM servers should stay online now, instead of being rebooted all the time by the control panel (message applies ONLY to game servers hosted at MarkMods).

You may contact your hosting company and inform them that I will create a solution which will be usable for any customer and/or company. Most likely the solution involves an update for;
serverside:
Gez Mod v22
MarkMod v13

Clientside:
New client mod (for viewing the serverlist)

I have no idea how we will cover all the expenses, but I am sure the community and the different hosting companies are willing to help out.
The rebuilding the master server project seems to be way to time consuming and I have strong doubts if it is even remotely possible, Luigi has written some very nice papers about GameSpy its CD-key SDK and it's in 2 words: pretty complicated.

The fastest way to success is most likely an update for all servermods and a new client mod. I've already had an email from our installer-builder, Abidh, that he is willing to create an user-friendly GUI installer for the client mod. Which saves me a lot of time to do more research :)

You have high experience with using SWAT 4 game servers OR client mods. You know how to fix problems on your own, in case a client or server mod doesn't work as it should.
You are capable of testing software, trying all possible options (not just the ones you need at that specific moment). You are capable of writing a very short report with features that are broken or need serious attention.
You understand the meaning of priorities.
Give me a PM if you are interested and only if you qualify the above.
Testing moments can be at any moment, most likely this monday - thursday. 1 hour a day would do most likely, testing usually takes 30 mins per test.
Ps: It may take up to a couple of days before I reply to my PMs, you can imagine the text-traffic over here most likely....

VOW clan did an app, i think it work little like mine, with an MySQL database and a socket to test each client of the database.

We could try to find where is "swat4.available.gamespy.com"  (which file), and change it to ask the server to register on a "personnal DataBase". Maybe could try to do it for a client, and return the reply of "\status\" (<- message used to know server status).

Data Send from server to swat4.available.gamespy.com (69.10.30.248:27900/UDP) : ".....swat4."

i hope these infos could help.

Agree with you, i checked ini files too, but i don't know edit unreal file (*.u), because maybe the answer is in it. ;) I checked IPDrv.u & ini with a text editor (notepad++) and nothing really interesting.

Has anyone considered OpenSpy?

They have a masterserver which has supported games in the past which GameSpy have dropped.
I talked to the creator and he gave me a patch which changes the hosts from GameSpy servers to OpenSpy servers.

Administrator Comment Please do not place links to .exe files which don\'t past all security tests of the most common anti-virus applications.

Of course this needs to be done on the servers too, but we couldn't upload the patch to our server to run (not sure why). Is there a way to change the host manually? (.ini file or something). If this is successful, it may be a temp solution.

I'm not sure how to edit it on the server... I edited mine in C:/Windows/System32/drivers/etc/hosts but this does not exist in the server.

I think the server uses the host file and the connection fu.ctions of the operating system. I think swat4 has no own hosts file.

First of all a dumb question. I remember that on Swat4 version 1.2 (unofficial ofc) and on mods like SSF the in-game server list was showing just the 1.2 and SSF-modded servers. Then i asked if they could simply set the A record of their masterserver hostname to point to our alternative "coming-asap" query protocol. In this way we don't need to edit the game or play with the host file. Same game, same servers. Let's see what happens.

How the SWAT4 developers must have thought: "You may not edit this. You may not alter that. You may touch this, but you will have to rewrite 1000 lines of codes. We do not allow you to modify this, but if you are smart you can modify it, however it will be a pain in the ass."

As promised, I'll give you guys an update once in a while:
After 5 hours of hacking, I finally found a way to hack myself into the SWAT 4 menu, without you having to type a command first and without you being blocked joining ANY random game server. (just altering the SWAT 4 menu is a piece of cake, but the key element here makes it complicated).

Of course, once figured out, it's just about 6 lines of code. You can call those 6 lines the made progress in 5 hours of work. Woohoo... Though, as you can imagine, these are thé most important pieces, so we can call this a serious breakthrough :)

Update 22:10h (Amsterdam time): The SWAT 4 protection is killing me. A SWAT 4 server doesn't allow an edited Menu of a client which wants to enter. As you can guess, that's exactly what we want: an edited Menu with a working server list again. After quite some hacking and work-arounds I finally made some progress. Though the menu isn't stable yet, so lots of work to do.

Beta Test results of V1 server-side: Basics are working perfectly. Server registers nicely to the mainserver, fully automatically (if you've configured the game server correctly).
Points of improvement: need to auto set the needed config, this will cause to much confusion for server hosters.

I'm calling it a day.
10 hours of trial and error has been enough for today.
Got the Menu Manipulation working pretty OK now, will start on a client <--> mainserver connection tomorrow.
Once that's working a new GUI for the serverlist is up next. will try to reuse the original serverlist GUI, but I have my doubts. will need to rebuild one from scratch I'm afraid (woohoo..).

You must register the server self, so it isn't a solution really ;) MarkMods will register all server using MM automatically.

I tried the aforementioned UAC server browser...

Mine doesnt work - when I try to connect to a server it just sticks on the loading screen and then fails to connect.

It looks exactly the same as when I try to connect to a 1.1 1.0 server, it doesn't connect for me.

However, connecting to a TSS 1.0 server via xfire works perfectly, and used to work with the serverlist too.

Can anybody help me please?

Edit: It looks like I can only join servers I have joined before, not new servers...

Not really. It's possible to automate the registration of servers with a simple script based on scheduled tasks. I could make it in a very short time with SQL (or even a text file) and one single script. It works same as a payment gateway. Grab data from your control panel (of course i'm talking of Game Service Providers) and every minute, with a cron job, collect all IPs of all your running Swat4 servers. Then send the array via POST or CURL to i_eat_ip.php and populate the server list. That's it.

The only problem is that it seems to me that everyone (not Mark of course) is trying to develop his "server list system" just to show off his skills. Again we don't need 10 different ways to get a list of servers. We need 1 way and we should cooperate.

I think thats a little unfair, my downloader app has been available for 5 years and the browser addition was released prior to anyone else even had anything else to show.  Saying this effort was only to show off "skills" as you put it is pure crap, the desire to keep the swat community going until a more workable solution was available is the only driving force.  Would you prefer it if we didn't spend our time doing this sort of stuff and leave you to sort yourself...MM has stated this could take some time and something is surely better than nothing..

Anyways rant over, I'm all for a single method, in fact if MM gets this working in game properly I'll gladly disable the function in my software and direct users here to get the mod.

As promised, I'll give you guys an update once in a while:

If you ever plan to manipulate the SWAT 4 Menu (in an advanced way) and you'd still like to be able to join a game server, I'd give you this advise: Do not.
 
It took me 10 hours today (AGAIN) to figure out what was bugging the GUI.

Good news though, the GUI is working for the client mod!
Up next (which should be childishly easy compared to the GUI hacking): the client <--> mainserver connection.
A first beta Thursday?! Who knows :)

However my tool is not just for the current community, it's also for ppl from the street who never played SWAT4 and want to join "some" server and have fun.
Now I am certain that there will be like 10+ guys like that :D , but I like having more options and even if the new master server will die or has some issues, my tool can be used even at that time.
If possible I'd like to co-op with you guys and get the swat4 gaming on the feet again.

and please , it's DExUS , or DEx , I hate if someone uses large X in my nickname :D

Update: did around 350 test runs ranging from monday-yesterday (figured I could see that somewhere in the logs). That's why GUI hacking in SWAT 4 sucks.
Update 2: found a serious bug in the GUI, again. No beta tonight.
Update 3: A first client beta will be available for SWAT 4 v1.1 (and possibly v1.0) only. TSS support needs additional research.

I mean i use port 10480 and query 10481, use bLan=true and i can
conect to the server and play but after 10 minuts all crash. help?

Ok, it's 4:30AM here now. I really can't fix the last bug.
That bug is: when you are kicked from a game server or when the connection to a game server failed, your game will shut down, instead of prompting a message nicely.

First of all thanks for your effort and i sorry for my previous message. I thought that the only possible way to pass over this problem was with an in-game Mod.

I wonder if you could make a page where Game Service Providers could automatically submit the list of all their hosted Swat4 servers in bulk on daily basis with a scheduled task. There are 2 possible options:

a) DExUS-side -> We send an array of IP:QueryPort to a page hosted by you then you can make all your stuff to add, update and remove servers in your alternative server list.
b) GSP-side -> We collect a list of always up to date IP:QueryPort in a file which you can use to test if servers are still online, if there are new ones etc.

Imo the best option is A because you can freely use all values for your queries, tests and further releases and we have to use the same logic to send data. In this way your server list will always be up to date automatically and only home-hosted server should be manually added. We already have a script which "grab" all our running Swat4 1.1, 1.0, 1.2, SSF and TSS servers. We just need you to tell us where we can push all data. I know that it costs you time/bandwidth then you could ask to Game Service Providers a registration fee. We would pay for it.

Yes, I tried to register a MarkMod-powered server but GameTracker refused the registration pretending that my server was offline (even if it was fully working), so I think that your hypothesis is correct.

Probably GameTracker tries to query the master-server in order to check if the server-to-add is online (and obviously gets no response), that's why the servers that didn't crash are still in GameTracker's list and we can't register our servers again.

EDIT: I posted about this situation on GameTracker general forum, I will keep you updated about their responses.

Fix to query and join your game server:

In SwatGuiState.ini, set:
bLan=True

In Swat4(X)DedicatedServer.ini set:
ServerQueryListenPort=10481

ServerQueryListenPort should be your port number + 1.
For example, is your port number 19480, then ServerQueryListenPort should be 19481

Querying the game server will only work from Xfire, it won't show up in the ingame server (no server does atm).


OK, so I did everything like you described and server is running good and visible on your servers list. But shall we change these settings back, I mean bLAN to False and port back to -1 ?

As promised previously, now that an in game (working) system has been implemented I've disabled the browser in the Swat Downloader, replaced with info on this mod/fix and links so people can come get it.  Now of course you can still use the Downloader to get your maps and mods :)

As promised previously, now that an in game (working) system has been implemented I've disabled the browser in the Swat Downloader, replaced with info on this mod/fix and links so people can come get it.  Now of course you can still use the Downloader to get your maps and mods :)

Hey guys! I can't overwrite the AMMod.u file. I keep getting error message in FileZilla!
Response:   551 /swat4/content/system/AMMod.u: Error on output file.
Error:   File transfer failed after transferring 262.144 bytes in 1 second
So if Markie or anyone can help i would be grateful. Its USA SWAT TEAM server.

Did you stopped your server before overwriting?

I installed In-game Serverlist Fix + ACM Mod. I can see clearly all fixed servers but i cannot join to my local server. I see him in list but i cannot join directly of course. And when i try to join through "direct IP" it is not working. I cannot joint to any server by use "direct IP".....Does anyone know how to register server on Gametracker?

THX for fast answer. ...But I thing this is the end of SWAT 4. Of course there are crazy guys who will love swat4 to the end of theirs miserable lives (like me for examle :) ) But fact is that common player just starts game and he finds out that server list is empty. He will not search how to fix this problem. So I thing that this game lost at least 70% of players  :( I wish I am wrong

We will see what the future will bring us :)
Almost 400 unique players have used the client mod since its release. (growing and growing!)
I expect some nice full game servers this weekend.
Btw: the number of registered game servers is still growing as well! Seen about 135 unique game servers whereof 85 online at this moment :)

i got same problem than blaster, one round appear in the list, and the next round is not there.

Oh and one more, when you force to spec yourself, something weird is happeing, its like you're in spec and server is crashed, but it's not, and when you get back to the game you just got an autokick.

If it'll happen with me again, I'm gonna record a video, so we can cleary see what's going on there.

P.S. What about making new topic about bug report of this Client patch. I know you said you're kinda busy with your study. So we could just share explored bugs in one topic, instead of making them in 3 topics :D

EDIT: As far as I know there are some new bugs like:

- Spectating issue. After spectating someone (or yourself) you can still see your gun aim, still can shoot (but you can't kill), time is stopping, and it looks like server crashed, but at the same time you can see on servers chat people playing, killing, arresting each others, so that means server doesnt crash. After you get back to the game from spectating you're getting an autokick.
- Some servers are not visible at server's list, until new round (new map) will start on the server.
- If you login as Super Admin you're getting an autokick (again happened to me and 2 of my clanmates)

EDIT: Oh and seems like that guy (the link above) who's having the same problem as me (with SPEC mode), he posted his thread on 18 Oct, before Client patch release, right? So if I'm not wrong, the cause of that bug could be the new AMMod.u file uploaded to server?

Thats not for the mod, I got that bug long time ago, and its when I changed my server config to lower the pings, it is a bug that comes with this config, and your server blaster, having the same config than mine, I gave the config to almada and almada installed in your servers a few months ago.  You can use VIEW wihout problems, thats what we do on my server,  or if you want to quit the SPEC bug, put a new ini file and bug gone.
